The Third New Town: An Exploration

Another only partially realised vision, the Third New Town encompasses much of the land of Calton Hill and would have extended north to connect to the also expanding Leith.

Laid out by the indomitable William Playfair and influenced profoundly by the views of his mentor, William Stark, the third new town creates even more elaborate urban forms. These also respond to the landscape itself, a hugely prominent feature in the thinking behind this urban layout.

The urban form here exists to emphasise the picturesque, marking a grand city with imperial ambitions.
